A brisk October morning in 1840‑s Oulu finds young Kaisu leaping out of bed, eager to greet her mother and hear the hopeful news that her seafaring father might finally return from a long voyage. The household bustles with preparations—cleaning the hearth, polishing furniture, and stitching new garments—because a father’s homecoming on his daughter’s ninth birthday would bring both celebration and the promise of a steadier life for the modest family.

Yet Kaisu’s world expands beyond the modest cottage when she befriends Maiju, a girl from a wealthy merchant family who boasts of fine clothes, foreign travels, and a future in Stockholm’s high society. Through whispered conversations, Kaisu learns how privilege shapes opportunities and how the expectations of the upper class can clash with the realities of her own upbringing. Her mother, watching the growing influence of Maiju’s circle, gently steers her daughter away from the allure of aristocratic pretensions, urging her to stay rooted in the values of their humble home.
