Maxwell, a weary scriptwriter for the Ministry of Information, and his companion Alice have spent a frantic weekend hopping from Venice to Paris and Nice, only to find the thrill of Earth fading into routine. When Alice suggests a trip beyond the familiar, Maxwell balks at the logistics but eventually agrees to a quick jump to a distant world. The pair board a liner bound for the Gamma Tauri system, hoping the unknown will reignite their excitement.
The planet Three, a half‑developed world of towering fern‑like trees and endless blue‑green plains, offers a striking contrast to the cramped cities they left behind. Riding air‑scooters in shorts, they scan the alien horizon, spotting strange six‑winged insects and a pebble‑covered shoreline. Alice’s binoculars then lock onto a solitary figure—a blond, muscular man stooping on the shore, the enigmatic “Beachcomber” from Maxwell’s old interviews. Intrigued, they realize this chance encounter may be the key to the adventure they truly seek.
