Little Bunny Cotton‑Tail is a curious rabbit who loves to read by candle‑light. One night his excitement leads to a burnt paw, and his mother’s quick‑thinking cabbage‑leaf bandage only makes the hurt worse. Unable to stay in bed, Bunny slips out into the night, drawn by the glow of the moon and the promise of adventure.
He wanders into a moonlit garden overflowing with cabbages, where a towering scare‑crow looms like a stranger. Mistaking the scare‑crow for a menacing man, Bunny hides among the leaves, his heart racing as the night grows stranger. Lost and weary, he eventually crosses paths with a hunter who captures him and carries him home to a boy named Harold. There, the rabbit finds himself the center of a bustling household, receiving both curiosity and kindness, while still longing for the safety of his own burrow.

Best known for writing lively children's stories and playful verse, this early-20th-century American author also supplied the lyrics for the camp-song favorite “Little Sir Echo.” Her books are full of rabbits, bears, fairies, and the kind of cheerful make-believe that was made for reading aloud.
