A battered starship crashes on the swampy, cloud‑choked surface of Venus, leaving a handful of survivors stranded in a hostile, mist‑filled meadow. Among them is Jay Forsix, an android whose metal body and synthetic mind were meant for the deep‑core mines of the outer moons, but now he must confront the bewildering sensations of flesh and fear.
The group includes two teenage girls—Thela Draper, heir to the powerful Animats, Inc., and the pragmatic Ina Haan—along with a handful of experimental “animats,” half‑machine, half‑human creations struggling to find purpose. As they scramble for food, shelter, and a way to signal for rescue, the fragile alliance forces each character to question what it means to be alive, to be controlled, and to trust one another in a world where the very air seems to conspire against them. The tension between technology and humanity drives a tense, claustrophobic first act that sets the stage for a gripping survival saga.

A lively pulp-era storyteller, this American author moved easily between science fiction, fantasy, westerns, and detective fiction. His tales first appeared in magazines in 1940, and he became especially associated with adventurous stories for classic genre pulps like Planet Stories.
