Dick Merriwell has just become the talk of Fardale Military School after a dazzling football performance that saw him score both touchdowns and kick two perfect goals. His teammates hoist him on their shoulders in triumph, yet the celebration masks a simmering jealousy among a few classmates who resent his sudden fame. Among those envious rivals are Uric Scudder, Zeb Fletcher, and especially Jabez Lynch, who coveted the half‑back position Dick now holds.

Frank Merriwell, Dick’s older brother, steps in to shape his younger sibling’s raw talent into something more refined. He pairs Dick’s natural athleticism with rigorous training from Old Joe, a seasoned Indian who teaches him speed, agility, and discipline, while also introducing a regimen of strength work that Frank believes will perfect the boy’s physique. Their combined efforts promise to turn Dick into an exemplary cadet, but the rivalry with Jabez threatens to undermine those plans.
