The widowed matriarch keeps a cold, watchful eye over the bustling household, while her son Glas drives the work forward with an almost manic energy. In the middle of this ceaseless churn is Phemy Madigan, a sturdy girl taken from a workhouse who has become the farm’s indispensable hand, juggling chores, repairs, and the ever‑growing demands of a place that seems to devour its people.
