A solitary university graduate roams the quiet countryside, his days spent in a crumbling manor where he pours over books while the world around him whispers of old traditions. He is an odd figure to the local intelligentsia—quiet, aloof, yet oddly beloved by the peasants who value his kindness and his curious questions. Across the road, the pastor’s teenage daughter lives in a bright, flower‑lined house, her days marked by the rituals of the church and the carefree games of childhood.
Their paths first cross when the young scholar passes the church garden, where the girl, hidden among the hedges, calls out to him in playful teasing. Though they know little of each other beyond fleeting glances, a tentative curiosity sparks between the thoughtful student and the lively girl. As the seasons turn, their occasional encounters hint at a growing connection that may challenge the expectations of their tightly knit community.

A Norwegian writer, preacher, and language advocate, he helped bring Landsmål into literature and wrote novels, stories, and religious works that reached readers far beyond Norway. His life took him from Bergen folk culture to the United States and back again, and that wide experience shaped both his fiction and his beliefs.
