A lone explorer named Rod Carver pushes his battered body up a sheer Antarctic glacier, the wind howling and ice cracking beneath his boots. After a reckless climb for a rare lichen sample, his axe slips away and the icy wall betrays him, leaving him dangling precariously over a yawning chasm. Cold, fear, and the relentless storm force him into a desperate scramble for any foothold, while the echoing collapse of the glacier hints at something far larger than his personal peril.
When the ice finally gives way, Rod awakens in a stark, windowless chamber of white walls and metallic lockers, the door closed behind him. The surreal setting raises questions about the hidden forces that have drawn him here and the whispered call for revolt against a shadowy regime known as the Capeks. As he confronts the unknown, the story blends brutal survival with a simmering rebellion, promising a tense journey beyond the frozen wastes.

A fast-moving pulp science fiction writer, he burst onto magazine pages around 1940 with energetic space operas full of danger, robots, and far-off worlds. Several of those stories still circulate today through Project Gutenberg, giving modern readers an easy way to sample his work.
