Slick Tennant, a hard‑nosed racketeer with a knack for reading danger, knows the feds are closing in. With his empire crumbling, he turns to a desperate option: disappearing into the future. The only person who might make that happen is Dr. Richard Porter, a widowed scientist who has built a controversial device the press calls a “time‑travel machine,” though he prefers the term Metachronoscope.
Slick forces his way into Porter’s modest home, brandishing a gun on the doctor’s young son to compel cooperation. He demands a jump ahead in time, hoping to outpace the law and start anew. Porter, wary and ethically torn, explains the machine’s limits—subjects can be sent forward, but the future can’t be reshaped or predicted, and the process is irreversible.
The encounter sets a tense stage where criminal ambition clashes with scientific caution, leaving listeners to wonder whether Slick’s gamble will buy him true freedom or plunge him into an even stranger unknown.

An elusive mid-century science fiction writer, she published stories in magazines like Astounding and Galaxy and left behind a small body of work that still circulates through Project Gutenberg. Her fiction often plays with big speculative ideas while keeping a sharp eye on ordinary human motives.
