At a quiet lakeside hotel in Switzerland, ten‑year‑old Fletcher and his eight‑year‑old sister Amy are left in the care of their widowed father’s friend while Mr. Hanway climbs the mountains for a visit. Ignoring his warning to stay away from boats, the curious children convince each other they can handle a short trek up the nearby slopes. With an alpenstock in hand and a basket for wildflowers, Fletcher leads Amy along winding forest paths, turning the simple hike into a lively lesson in alpine geography.
The siblings pause on a sunny ledge, sharing candy and trading names of distant peaks, while Amy soon drifts into a nap that leaves Fletcher to keep watch. When she awakens, the pair set off in earnest, gathering blossoms and racing the setting sun back toward the hotel. Their playful descent, full of slipping stones and giggles, tests Fletcher’s promise to protect his sister and hints at the gentle challenges that await them before dinner.
