Miss Colbourne’s modest boarding‑room is a study in quiet determination. She has set a dainty tea, the copper kettle humming, porcelain cups from her grandmother lining the table, and hot cakes warming by the fire. The room itself is a jumble of clashing crimson curtains, a green table‑cloth, and stacks of books that speak of a mind too eager to collect rather than to settle.
When her former pupil Jessie Blaher arrives, the two women slip into a warm recollection of years gone by. Over tea they examine a delicate silk portfolio filled with sketches of Florentine streets and church interiors—images a friend gathered to illustrate the novel Romola. Miss Colbourne’s eyes shine with the secret hope that one day she might walk those very streets herself.
Later, the churchwarden’s wife drops by, reminding Miss Colbourne of the practicalities of daily life. Their chat hints at the small community that surrounds her, while the lingering dream of Italy remains a bright, unsolved puzzle waiting for the next chapter.
