Born during a buffalo hunt near the mouth of the Yellowstone River, this Hidatsa writer and interpreter helped preserve important firsthand accounts of Hidatsa life, farming, and tradition. His voice also appears behind classic ethnographic works recorded with his mother, Buffalo Bird Woman.

Gilbert Livingstone Wilson

1868–1930

An American ethnographer and Presbyterian minister, he is best remembered for recording the lives and knowledge of Hidatsa people, especially Buffalo Bird Woman and her family. His work helped preserve detailed accounts of Hidatsa agriculture, material culture, and everyday life.
