The Home of Art is a crumbling Georgian mansion on Crook Street, its ivy‑clad walls and sagging cedar a backdrop for a bustling community of young musicians, writers and actors. Run by the warm‑hearted Mrs. Sellars, a retired actress, the house offers cheap board, hearty meals and a motherly ear to the hopeful artists who fill its cramped rooms. Their days are a mix of rehearsals, cramped study tables and the occasional theatrical triumph, all set against the damp, fog‑laden streets of Bayswater.
When a fledgling playwright’s new work finally reaches the stage, the entire household gathers for a night of celebration, each resident hoping the performance will launch their own ambitions. Yet beneath the festive chatter, a strange commission arrives—a request tied to a priceless Japanese jewel and a diplomatic intrigue that promises to upend the quiet rhythm of their lives. The boarders soon find themselves drawn into a mystery that could change the fate of the house itself.
