In the heat of a relentless factory strike, a widowed factory worker drifts through the bleak streets of early‑20th‑century Helsinki. Juho has lost his wife and his only surviving child, and the little savings he once guarded are gone, leaving him to scrape by as a handyman for a local family. The endless monotony of the strike mirrors his own sense of helplessness, and each day feels like a slow, aimless crawl.
Amid the desolation, the only thing that still speaks to him is an old wooden flute he once shared with his son. When he lifts it to his lips, the simple melody pulls him back to memories of a brighter past, offering a brief reprieve from the dark thoughts that linger. Yet the weight of poverty and grief presses on, and he finds himself teetering on the edge of a decision he cannot fully comprehend.
