On the longest day of the year, young Daniel wrestles with a stubborn sense of duty and his own yearning for freedom. The fog‑cloaked morning forces him to grind at the family scythe while his mind drifts to the promise of fishing at the mill‑pond, a pastime he cherishes more than the grindstone’s relentless rhythm. When a sudden mishap with the Deacon’s horse and carriage seems to claim the life of the Deacon’s frail granddaughter, panic seizes Daniel, and the weight of imagined guilt begins to crush him.
Haunted by the thought of a hanging, Daniel flees the fields, his heart pounding as distant wheels roll through the sand. An unexpected voice offers him a lift, and he finds himself seated beside Deacon Skinner, the very man whose family he believes he has harmed. In this uneasy encounter, Daniel must confront his fear and the truth of what truly happened, setting the stage for a tense reckoning that will test his courage and honesty.
