On a wind‑scarred outpost far from any bustling colony, a lone miner struggles against a relentless fever that has turned his body into a battlefield. Each breath is a reminder of the thin, hissing oxygen that sustains him, while Hertha, a native caretaker, mixes improvised remedies from whatever she can find. The disease, a mutated strain of liguna fever, has already claimed crews on distant expeditions, and its grip on him is both physical and psychological.
Haunted by the memory of a failed vaccine and the loss of his once‑lucrative mining claims, he watches his savings dwindle as each episode forces costly trips to distant hospitals. Yet the pull of a new frontier—promising wealth and a chance to escape the indifferent void of space—keeps his hope flickering. As the fever spikes and his strength wanes, he must decide whether to cling to the fragile care Hertha offers or risk everything for a chance at redemption on an uncharted world.

A mid-century science fiction writer with a sharp eye for how ordinary people react to strange new worlds, he is best remembered for stories that blend big ideas with a grounded, human touch. His work appeared in leading genre magazines of the 1950s and helped shape the feel of postwar American science fiction.
