A solitary astronaut, Ingomar Bjorgson, lands on the scorching, wind‑blown world of Lorrane, hoping to confirm rumors of an intelligent species hidden among its endless dunes. After a forced stay in a protective bubble, he steps out into the harsh desert, confronting his own mortality as the sun beats down and the sand swallows his footprints. The planet is a dead‑end for many, but for Ingomar it is a chance to make the first contact humanity has ever known.
Soon he spots two sleek, two‑foot‑tall birds gliding across the dunes, their feathers immaculate and eyes keen. To his astonishment they speak English, recalling the instructions left by a previous explorer, and engage him in a terse, almost bureaucratic dialogue about honesty and social protocol. Their unexpected intellect and sharp personalities turn the simple quest for discovery into a tense dance of trust, leaving Ingomar—and the listener—to wonder whether these avian beings are allies, rivals, or something altogether stranger.
