A sweltering September evening finds Helen Raymond on edge as her husband Robert paces the cramped living room, his nervous sniffing echoing the oppressive heat. The arrival of Helen’s cousin Dora—another fleeting jobless guest—only amplifies the tension, especially when an odd, sweet‑bitter scent drifts through the open windows. The family can’t place the smell, but it reminds Helen of the strange weeds that have lately overtaken her garden.
When Helen brings a vivid, metallic‑green plant from a neighbor’s vacant lot, the mystery deepens. The strange foliage seems to be the source of the peculiar odor, and soon after, the women in the close‑knit court begin to turn an unmistakable shade of green. Panic spreads as the neighbors gather, their faces pale with fear, while the men remain oddly unaffected. The story follows Helen’s frantic search for answers as the suburban world she knows starts to look very different.

A little-known science fiction writer from the 1950s, she left behind a very small body of work that still catches readers with its wit and offbeat imagination. Her best-known story, Green Grew the Lasses, first appeared in Galaxy Science Fiction in 1953.
