In a wide valley a sun‑lit hill crowns the Solbakken farm, tended by Guttorm and Karen, devout Haugian readers. Their daughter Synnöve, born after a tragic loss, quickly becomes famed for her beauty and quiet strength. She accompanies her parents to Sunday services, learning faith while caring for the animals the family entrusts to her. The lingering autumn snow and early spring melt reflect the simple, resilient world she knows.
Beyond the valley lies Granliden, a secluded farm encircled by spruce forest and bound by an old family legend that only every second son named Thorbjörn finds luck. Sämund, the current owner, raises his son Thorbjörn with strict discipline, assigning hard chores and constant lessons. The boy’s days are filled with rearranging firewood, mending broken cups, and soothing a frightened cat, while his mother offers gentle comfort when she can. Their strained relationship hints at the challenges of growing up under such exacting expectations.
