On a bright Sabbath morning in the rolling Cumbrian hills of Tennessee, the countryside awakens in a patchwork of green ridges, sparkling streams and scattered cabins. The air hums with the ringing of the church bell and the scent of hollyhocks and azaleas blooming along the forest paths. Villagers, dressed in their Sunday best, gather for the day’s worship, while the women tend to gardens and the men prepare for the work of the week ahead.
From a high ridge, a twenty‑three‑year‑old newcomer watches the scene below, his eyes landing on Callista Gentry—a striking young woman whose beauty and poise command the admiration of the whole community. Her friends, both boys and girls, circle her like a court, and the local boys argue over who will win her favor. The arrival of Lance Cleaverage, a charismatic outsider, promises to stir the gentle rivalries and set the stage for lively debates, laughter, and the inevitable entanglements of youthful love.

Best known for vivid fiction written with her sister Grace MacGowan Cooke, she helped create dozens of novels and stories that moved easily between mystery, regional fiction, and historical adventure. Her work has a strong storytelling drive and a feel for place that still makes early 20th-century popular fiction fun to explore.
