A weary narrator arrives in the remote mountain village of Valdigorgo, hoping the fresh air and the kindness of the Moser family will revive his spirit. He finds a bustling household: Claudio, the generous host; his ailing wife Eugenia, whose frailty haunts the rooms; their daughters Marcella and Ortensia, lively yet burdened by their mother’s illness; and the energetic little Mino. Yet the protagonist remains detached, retreating to his own thoughts and studies, unable to engage with the life that surrounds him.
The tranquil landscape and the family's quiet struggles begin to chip away at his indifference. Eugenia’s soft admonitions to look beyond his books, and the subtle rhythms of daily chores, stir a lingering curiosity about the world beyond his internal exile. As the days pass, the narrator’s solitude is quietly challenged, setting the stage for a deeper confrontation with his own expectations and the fragile hopes of those around him.
