In a dim, winter‑lit parlor of an old New York townhouse, two teenage girls—Louise and Esther—create a private sanctuary amid the polished trimmings of respectable society. Though their families possess the usual marks of wealth, propriety and faith, the girls feel apart from the polished circles that surround them. Their room, draped in dark hangings and scattered with delicate lace, becomes a stage for a quiet, almost reverent ceremony.
The centerpiece of their ritual is a small cabinet holding a photograph of a handsome French tenor, illuminated by the soft glow of scented candles. As the clock chimes, Esther plays the piano while the girls sing a hushed Faure arrangement, their voices weaving together longing and imagination. The scene captures their blend of youthful sentiment, artistic yearning, and the gentle melancholy of a world they can observe but not fully enter.

A sharp, witty voice from late 19th-century New York, this poet, journalist, and storyteller helped shape the tone of the humor magazine Puck. His work moves easily between light verse, satire, and warm, observant sketches of city life.
