Antonio is a young gondolier navigating the winding canals of Venice with nothing but his charm, a threadbare boat, and a fervent prayer for a better future. He dreams that an English patron will arrive, providing the steady income needed to buy his own gondola and lift his wife out of hunger. When word reaches him that a recently arrived English couple plans to settle in the city, Antonio sees his long‑awaited chance and prepares to win their favor.
The story follows Antonio’s careful scheming and heartfelt devotion as he positions himself to become the couple’s guide through the watery labyrinth. His devotion to the Madonna and his keen eye for tourists’ needs add humor and pathos to his quest. Listeners will be drawn into the vivid atmosphere of 19th‑century Venice, feeling both the romance of its waterways and the everyday struggles of those who make their living upon them.
