A young harpooner, fresh from the icy ports of Havre, finds himself torn from his ship’s white sails and thrust into the harsh interior of Patagonia, taken captive by the region’s fierce yet misunderstood natives. Stripped of clothing and bound to the backs of wild horses, he endures a relentless march, his companions succumbing to madness and despair while he clings to a stubborn hope that keeps him alive. Over months he learns to navigate the steppes, earns the grudging respect of his captors, and masters the art of riding the very horses that once threatened his escape.
When the chance finally arrives, he seizes it, fleeing under a veil of night with a stolen mount, pursued by lances and bolas. Exhausted and wounded, he stumbles upon a patrol of Buenos Airean cavalry, who mistake him for one of the natives he fled. The encounter offers a precarious glimpse of freedom, setting the stage for a perilous journey toward redemption and home.
