A young woman named Jees Uck, born of a tangled heritage that weaves together Inuit, Indigenous, and Russian roots, finds herself caught between the harsh wilderness of the Yukon and the far‑flung ambitions of fur traders. As the daughter of a Russian‑born merchant and a lineage of nomadic peoples, she grows up hearing the old oral stories while navigating a world where love, sacrifice, and survival are constantly tested. The narrative follows her early years, the loss of her parents, and the precarious journey that leads her to the remote outpost of Fort Yukon.
There she meets Spike O’Brien, a weary employee of the Hudson’s Bay Company, whose own longing for freedom mirrors Jees’s quest for identity. Their tentative friendship offers a glimpse of hope amid the relentless cold and the looming threat of conflict with rival tribes. Together they confront the challenges of a frontier life where every decision can mean the difference between life and loss.
