Johnny Thompson, a wide‑eyed traveler from Illinois, finds himself in the quiet valleys of the Cumberland Mountains, helping at an old grinding mill. While watching massive stone wheels turn, he hears a strange hissing and learns from the red‑haired local, Ballard, that a mysterious man has been hauling “cold, smoking” jars up from the depths of the mill. The jars produce a faint white vapor and have left strange marks on Ballard’s skin, hinting at something far more valuable than ordinary corn.
The mill’s lower chambers are boarded tight, hiding the secret machinery that seems to turn water and air into a glittering, almost magical substance. Intrigued by the promise of “gold from the sky,” Johnny decides to uncover the truth, even as the rugged mountain folk keep their secrets close. Listeners will be drawn into a tale of curiosity, hidden invention, and the raw beauty of a world where folklore meets early industry.
