A sprightly monkey named Jacko makes his home in a towering banyan tree, delighting in daring tricks that keep the jungle’s other creatures on their toes. He swings down the tangled roots, snatches tails, and even dares to tease the mighty lion and lioness, earning their fierce irritation. When his boldness finally provokes the big cats, they enlist a gruff old bear to help teach the cheeky primate a lesson.
The plan puts Jacko into a dark, cold larder deep within the lions’ cave, where he survives on a single banana a day while the hungry felines plot his fate. Bored with his meager diet, Jacko longs for a coconut, sparking a frantic scramble among the rats, lions, and bear to bring the prized fruit down from the treetops. As the jungle’s residents hustle to satisfy both Jacko’s cravings and their own appetites, the monkey’s cleverness is put to the test, setting the stage for a lively showdown in the heart of the forest.

Best known for creating Little Black Sambo in 1899, this Scottish-born writer of children's books spent many years in India and drew on that experience in her stories. Her work became famous very quickly, and it has also remained part of wider conversations about race, publishing, and how older classics are read today.
