In a remote countryside stands a magnificent castle, its towers gleaming amid evergreen groves. Its owner is a man of great wealth—gold‑trimmed furnishings, silk‑covered chairs, and carriages fit for a king—yet his most striking feature is a grotesque blue beard that has earned him a fearful reputation. Despite his riches, the villagers whisper about the mysterious fates of his previous wives. Two beautiful sisters, Anne and Fatima, live with their modest mother a distance away, their beauty drawing the attention of the enigmatic noble.
When the blue‑bearded gentleman arrives with a proposal, he offers the sisters a life of luxury in exchange for their hand. Their mother, persuaded by his courteous manners and promises of comfort, urges them to consider the match, even as the girls recoil at his appearance. Undeterred, he invites the family and a few local ladies to spend a few days at his estate, promising a glimpse of his opulent surroundings. The party sets out, marveling at the fragrant gardens and towering trees, and soon stands before the grand doors of the castle, where servants await their arrival.

Best known for shaping the classic fairy tale, this 17th-century French writer helped give lasting literary form to stories like "Cinderella," "Sleeping Beauty," and "Little Red Riding Hood." His tales blend courtly wit, moral lessons, and the dark sparkle of older folk tradition.
