The Brighton Boys in the Trenches

The story opens on the sun‑lit boardwalk of Brighton Academy, where a close‑knit group of friends is finishing their final exams and saying farewell to the carefree days of school. Whispers of enlistment drift through the trees as classmates discuss the various branches—flying squadrons, submarines, naval fleets—each promising its own brand of adventure. The atmosphere crackles with a mix of youthful optimism and the inevitable shadows of an impending war.

At the center is Herb Whitcomb, a tall, thoughtful seventeen‑year‑old who wrestles with the choice of service. Inspired by his pal Roy Flynn’s boisterous confidence, Whitcomb resolves to join the Engineers’ Corps, believing it the most vital part of the army.
