In the waning years of the nineteenth century, a fragile peace between the United States and Great Britain teeters on the brink. American fishing vessels, now escorted by naval cruisers, ply the cold waters off Newfoundland, each crew keenly aware that a misstep could spark an international incident. The schooner Eliza Drum, pressed for time, pushes her crew to the limits as they haul in a promising cod catch just beyond the disputed three‑mile boundary.
When the British cruiser Dog Star intercepts the Eliza Drum, a heated exchange erupts—flags are raised, guns fire, and both sides claim the law is on their side. The clash quickly becomes a national spectacle, its news flashing across telegraph lines and igniting a firestorm of outrage from coast to prairie. As politicians, preachers, and ordinary citizens demand redress, the incident threatens to drag the two nations into a larger conflict.
Against this backdrop, listeners will follow the tangled web of legal arguments, personal loyalties, and the looming specter of war, all seen through the eyes of sailors, diplomats, and everyday Americans caught in the surge.
