Frank and his younger cousin Archie have earned a reputation in their small village as daring hunters after a memorable showdown with a moose. Their world expands when Uncle James, a long‑absent miner turned storyteller, returns from California with vivid tales of the frontier, Indian conflicts, and the rugged life of the plains. The boys quickly fall under his spell, joining him on local hunts and sharing in his enthusiasm for the untamed wilderness.
When spring arrives, Uncle James announces plans to settle his business in California and proposes that the boys accompany him on a journey across the prairie. Their fathers are hesitant, fearing the dangers of bears and panthers, but James promises vigilant oversight. The prospect of a real adventure ignites the cousins’ imaginations, setting the stage for a trek that could test their courage and bond like never before.
