Arctic Adventures

A restless Highlander, raised among the Scottish hills, finally secures a place aboard the stout Dundee vessel Hardy Norseman, eager to witness the auroras, polar bears and endless midnight sun of the far north. He joins as purser and captain’s clerk, hoping the voyage will also bring news of his brother David, who vanished on a previous whaling expedition. The promise of wild adventure mixes with a personal quest, setting the stage for a journey that will test his courage.

The crew is a colorful mix of Scots, Shetlanders, Norwegians and Danes, led by the boisterous boatswain Sandy Steggall, whose endless yarns of bears, shipwrecks and frozen graves keep the deck alive with humor and warning. Early on, a faint moan from the hold leads the narrator to a frail, unnamed stowaway, whose sudden appearance hints at unseen dangers lurking beneath the ship’s timber. As the crew rallies to help the stranger, the cold Arctic air seems to carry whispered omens, promising that the expedition will reveal far more than scenic marvels alone.
