A young man of striking intelligence and generous spirit, Boswell Beddome grew up in a family steeped in Baptist tradition. From his earliest days he was praised for his cheerful obedience and his talent for quick, accurate learning, traits that shone at a school overseen by Rev. S. Palmer. When a promising mercantile position opened in Dorchester, his employers quickly recognized his reliability and promoted him, giving him early experience in business and a modest financial foundation.

His career brought him into contact with a family of fervent Unitarians, whose disciplined worship and intellectual vigor presented a stark contrast to his upbringing. The encounter sparked a period of intense inner conflict, driving him to study Scripture with deep prayerfulness. Ultimately, he embraced the Calvinistic faith of his ancestors, publicly professing his belief through baptism and later serving as a deacon, a role that reflected his steadfast commitment to the convictions he had wrestled to adopt.
