Description

Risto is a spirited twelve‑year‑old who leaves his home in North Savonia with nothing but a pair of bread‑scissors and a bold claim that he’s a merchant. As he wanders from the Finnish heartland to the pastures of Aunus and the fields of Estonia, he picks up Russian and Swedish, trading his modest wares for food in a land still scarred by war and famine. His journeys are a patchwork of encounters—hunters, fellow travelers, and the occasional curious stranger—each adding color to his restless quest for independence.

Back at his family’s modest cabin, Risto’s father Lassi hopes his son will follow the traditional path of a trapper, teaching him the chants and tricks for setting rabbit snares and bird traps. Yet Risto’s mind is already full of distant horizons, and he struggles to reconcile his father’s expectations with his own yearning to explore. The story follows his attempts to master the old ways while keeping the fire of adventure alive, offering a vivid glimpse of life on the Finnish frontier in the late nineteenth century.
