Two young men, Ralph and Richard Trevannion, inherit nothing but a modest sum after their father's death and a ruthless lawyer seizes the family estate. Stripped of land and home in their native Cornwall, the brothers confront the bitter reality of legal deceit that has left them penniless and humbled. Determined not to linger in disgrace, they resolve to venture beyond their familiar cliffs in search of a way to reclaim what was taken.
Guided by their education and the vigor of youth, they dismiss traditional paths of army or navy service, opting instead for honest labor that might quickly amass the fortune they need. Their journey takes them from bustling ports to remote towns, where they encounter a cast of characters—some eager to help, others looking to profit from their desperation. As they grapple with the practicalities of work and the lure of adventure, the brothers discover that reclaiming their heritage may require far more than money alone.
