Two friends, Harry and Walter, spend a sweltering summer on the Isle of Shoals, a rocky New England retreat where their families own shipping and dry‑goods empires. With a mischievous spirit and a promise of one last adventure, they convince a nurse to watch Walter’s baby sister while they slip away to the harbor. There they join Jim Libby, the good‑natured crew‑member of the fishing schooner Mary Walker, who offers them a ride in his battered tender, the Sally Walker.
As the wind wanes and the tide shifts, the boys wrestle with the clumsy little boat, learning the ropes of seamanship and the unpredictable temperament of the sea. Their carefree escapade quickly turns into a test of courage and quick thinking, as the tiny craft drifts farther from shore than they anticipated. The story captures the thrill of youthful daring against the backdrop of salty breezes, creaking wood, and the ever‑present pull of the ocean.
