A young university student, fresh from his strict home, finds himself stuck in a cycle of missed deadlines and endless apologies to his father. When his father arranges a placement with a well‑known house‑mistress in the Fjärdingen quarter, the scholar’s world flips overnight—from quiet coffee at eight to lavish breakfasts of spirits, hearty fare, and lively chatter with a dozen fellow students.
The new environment tempts him into indulgent mornings, long walks that make him late for lectures, and evenings spent drinking, smoking, and debating music. Determined to honor his father’s trust, he vows to stay in his room after meals and focus on his studies, only to be repeatedly drawn back into the convivial chaos of the boarding house. As the days blur together, his struggle to balance duty and desire sets the stage for a poignant exploration of youthful ambition, familial expectations, and the allure of a freer life.

A restless, fiercely original writer, this Swedish author helped reshape modern drama with psychologically intense plays and fearless self-examination. His work moves from sharp realism to dreamlike experimentation, and it still feels startlingly alive.
