A well‑established landed family in Sussex faces a sudden shift when the aging, childless uncle passes away, leaving behind a tangled estate. The senior Mr. Dashwood, who has long enjoyed the comfort of his relatives’ company, expected the bulk of the inheritance to fall to his own line. Instead, the will distributes the bulk of the property to his grandson, a toddler, while granting modest sums to his three daughters and their mother.
The unexpected bequest throws the household into uncertainty. Henry’s son, John, a cautious and financially secure young man, must now balance his own comfortable position with the modest expectations of his step‑sisters, who are accustomed to a life of privilege. Their differing temperaments—John’s measured pragmatism versus the sisters’ more passionate sensibilities—set the stage for a delicate struggle between duty, affection, and the very different ways love can be expressed.

Known for sparkling wit, sharp social observation, and unforgettable heroines, this beloved English novelist turned everyday courtship, family pressure, and money worries into enduring fiction. Her six major novels, including Pride and Prejudice and Emma, still feel lively and surprisingly modern.
