An Earth survey team touches down on Waterfield’s Planet, a sprawling desert dotted with oddly regular oases fed by hidden rivers. Led by the self‑assured psychologist Brucker, the crew—along with their companions Sweets and Majesky—approaches a tribal ceremony where the native chief, perched on a throne of shoulders, greets them in a riot of colorful ribbons and ancient regalia. Their formal greeting quickly turns into a surreal spectacle when the locals present a massive, oddly feathered creature that waddles forward, belches, and mimics a pompous orator, sparking uncontrollable laughter from both sides.
The encounter highlights the clash of egos and cultures: Brucker’s pompous confidence meets the natives’ unexpected humor, while the crew’s careful protocol is tested by the alien customs. As the dust settles, the astronauts find themselves questioning whether their diplomatic pretense is genuine or merely a performance, setting the stage for deeper, uneasy negotiations on this enigmatic world.
