Born in the bustling streets of Delhi to a British officer, the young Julius grows up amid the sights, sounds, and languages of India, feeling at home among both colonial and native worlds. When his wealthy uncle in England offers to fund a proper education, his father agrees, and the boy’s ambitions are set alight by the promise of school, a future in the service, and the chance to see the distant land of his forebears.
The story follows his four‑month passage from Calcutta to England aboard a massive East Indiaman, a ship that becomes his first classroom in the wide‑open sea. On deck he battles seasickness, learns the ropes of sailing, and forms quiet friendships with fellow travelers, especially a spirited young lady named Constance who shares evening tales. As the vessel drifts through calm, moonless nights, Julius begins to sense that the world beyond the horizon holds both wonder and uncertainty, setting the stage for the adventures that lie ahead.

An English army officer who turned his wide-ranging experience into adventure stories, military writing, and astronomy books, he moved easily between practical science and popular fiction. He was also a friend of Arthur Conan Doyle, who dedicated The Captain of the Polestar to him.
