Out of the Earth

In a near‑future where the state brands dissent as treason, a handful of condemned citizens are sentenced to “elimination” in the Black Passage—a bleak, lamp‑lit corridor that separates life from oblivion. The story opens with Jon Farmer, a humble mushroom farmer, and his wife Nina, who are abruptly hauled before a ruthless tribunal after a routine agricultural article is deemed subversive. Their trial is swift, their fate sealed, and they are thrust into a world where death itself is proclaimed a myth.

Escorted through a procession of ruined cities, the group—Jon, Nina, a disgraced doctor, a fisherman, a timid laborer, and a hulking ex‑foreman—must navigate the perpetual darkness of the passage, clinging to the faint glow of their lamps. As they march toward an ominous iron gate, the strangers’ courage and desperation intertwine, hinting at a collective resolve to defy a regime that believes the dead are already gone.
