A grizzled prospector named Tod Denver pilots a rattling space sled across the blistering surface of the Moon’s Appenines, chasing the promise of a hidden mining bonanza. His only companion is Charley, a two‑yard‑long “moondog” that clings magnetically to metal, glows with an eerie iridescence, and seems to have a temperament as volatile as the circuitry it constantly short‑circuits. Their uneasy partnership is born of a lost gambling wager, and while Charley’s antics often threaten to doom the mission, Denver can’t shake the grudging affection he feels for the luminous creature.
The story opens with the sled’s battered systems fighting the furnace‑like sun, forcing Denver to execute a perilous landing amid volcanic ash and jagged rock. As the sled shudders to a halt, the duo must contend with overheating equipment, a hostile environment, and the ever‑present possibility that Charley’s next burst of energy could spell disaster. Yet amid the heat and the humor, the narrative captures the quirky bond between a hard‑bitten human and his extraordinary, electrically‑charged pet, promising a blend of tension and light‑hearted sci‑fi adventure.

A museum curator by profession and a pulp storyteller by passion, he brought a thoughtful, literary touch to science fiction and fantasy magazines of the 1940s and 1950s. His work often mixed imagination with psychology, myth, and a quietly unsettling sense of wonder.
