The story opens in a Denmark bruised by war and the fading glory of Queen Margaret’s reign. Niilo Svane, a loyal nobleman, raises a family amid relentless battles, financing troops with his own dwindling estate and watching his forces crumble. When his fortunes collapse and he falls in combat, his wife Guldborg is left to protect their young son, Valdemar, while the kingdom’s courts turn deaf to her pleas.
Faced with ruin, Guldborg gathers what little remains and, accompanied by the faithful nurse Märta, embarks on a desperate trek toward Roskilde. The sunrise bathes the infant’s face as she prays for divine protection, hoping the bustling city and its churches might offer shelter and a chance to appeal to the queen herself. Along the road, the family confronts the harsh reality of loss, yet clings to the fragile promise of a new beginning.
