In this lively Greek drama, the wandering hero Odysseus finds himself shipwrecked on the rocky shores of Sicily after the fall of Troy. Seeking food and shelter, he and his men stumble upon the cavern of the one‑eyed giant Polyphemus, only to discover the monster away on a hunt. When the Cyclops returns, he devours two of Odysseus’s companions, prompting the clever hero to devise a daring plan that involves wine, deception, and a blinding strike.
The play is animated by a chorus of mischievous satyrs led by the boisterous Seilenos, whose songs and dances weave mythic references into the action. Their playful banter and vivid descriptions of the island’s wild landscape add humor and a touch of the divine, contrasting sharply with the peril faced by the Greeks. The first act sets the stage for a tense showdown, balancing wit, danger, and the timeless clash between mortal ingenuity and monstrous strength.
