In a modest brown house on the edge of twilight, a widowed mother keeps the hearth alive with her tireless work as a seamstress. She stitches coats, mends garments, and scrapes together just enough money to feed her five lively children, each of whom adds a splash of noise and laughter to the cramped kitchen. The day’s “breathing spell” offers a brief pause, but even then the children’s chatter about candles and light fills the room with hope.
Older siblings Polly and Ben, ten and eleven, feel a fierce responsibility to lift their family out of hardship. Their secret schemes and whispered plans revolve around finding a way to bring education and brighter days to their brood. Meanwhile the younger Pepper children watch with admiration, dreaming of the day their sister’s grand candle‑lit vision might become reality. Together, they face the challenges of winter, scarce resources, and a relentless need for ingenuity, all while keeping their home warm with love and determination.
