In the waning days of the Ming dynasty, a solitary scholar named Li Hua lives in the quiet town of Luoyang. Orphaned and unburdened by family ties, he spends his days immersed in classic texts, his modest home filled with the scent of ink and chrysanthemum tea. On the festive night of the Double Ninth, he welcomes his old friend Zhang Yanxing—a once‑promising jinshi whose career was shattered by a clerical error—and the two share wine, poetry, and uneasy reflections on destiny.

Their reunion quickly turns tense as Zhang, embittered by his lost ambitions, muses about abandoning the scholar’s path for a life among the outlaw bands of Jiashan Mountain. Li, ever the moralist, urges caution, fearing the harsh judgment of the law. The night takes an unexpected turn when a desperate thief slips into Li’s courtyard, forcing both men to confront the thin line between compassion and justice.
