In the early months of Portugal’s new Republic, João da Silveira feels the world he once knew crumble beneath him. A disillusioned aristocrat, he watches the old symbols of his nation fade, replaced by a restless, revolutionary tide that threatens the privileges of his class. When a chance to escape the turmoil arises, he boards a ship bound for South America, leaving behind a promised marriage and a life of certainty.
The voyage opens a landscape of both physical and inner exile, as João confronts the clash between his nostalgic loyalty and the harsh realities of a foreign continent. Along the way, he encounters fellow exiles, new ambitions, and the seductive promise of a different future. The narrative captures his tentative steps toward a world where old titles mean little, and survival depends on adapting to a restless, unfamiliar land.
