A young naval cadet named Clifford Faraday finds himself aboard the swift tug Uncas, bound from Key West toward the blockading fleet off Havana. The sea is rough, the war on the horizon, and the cadet’s restless curiosity drives him to keep a vigilant eye on the distant Spanish defenses. He dreams of playing a part in the looming conflict, even as the ship cuts through the churning water with surprising speed.
Faraday’s thoughts are haunted by a shadowy figure named Ignacio, a relentless adversary who once tried to assassinate a senior admiral. Their past clash left the cadet wounded but alive, and the memory of that encounter fuels a growing sense of danger. As the Uncas draws nearer to the hostile coast, the tension between duty and personal vendetta sets the stage for a daring chase that could plunge Faraday into enemy hands, testing his courage and resolve.

Best known for writing The Jungle, he used fiction as a tool for reform, turning outrage over social injustice into page-turning stories. His work helped expose the brutal realities of industrial America and made him one of the most influential muckraking writers of his era.
