The Three Commanders

The story opens on the tranquil shores of Loch Etive, where Alick Murray’s Highland estate spreads across windswept hills, fragrant woodlands, and a serene loch. From the verandah he watches his young son, while his wife Stella cradles a newborn, their lives rooted in the beauty of Bercaldine and the quiet rhythms of garden and sea. The peaceful scene is tinged with anticipation as a cutter approaches, hinting at the arrival of a familiar guest and the stir of new responsibilities.

Soon the Murray household is drawn into the world of naval adventure when Admiral Triton and his entourage arrive, and Alick is summoned to join the crew of the steamship Opal as a lieutenant. Together with the charismatic young officer Adair and a poet‑loving fellow, they prepare to set sail from the Scottish coast toward the East African coast.
