In a modest village beside the southern gate of Yangzhou, a quiet yet formidable couple lives on the fringe of legend. Kou Sì Yé, the fourth son of the Kou family, inherits the secret arts of the ancient White Lotus sect—subtle illusion, swift spear work, and uncanny precision—while his wife, Kou Sì Niáng, wields twin swords with a grace that turns any challenger into a fleeting shadow. Their life is simple, tending a few fields and practicing their craft, yet the looming famine and relentless floods threaten to strip away their modest stability.
When the harvest fails and the river swells, the pair decide to leave their home in search of a better future, packing their modest belongings onto a sturdy horse. Along the dusty road they encounter Qin Shaozong, a fellow villager burdened by loss, who offers them hospitality and a glimpse of the larger world’s hardships. Their departure marks the beginning of a journey that will test both their martial prowess and the fragile ties of love, setting the stage for encounters that blur the line between illusion and reality.
